I've been working on packaging of LinuxCNC's Enhanced Machine Controller and the necessary realtime kernel for use on Ubuntu 5.10 (Breezy Badger). I think Ubuntu is a promising Debian variant and I'm happy to say that installing and running it is now pretty darn easy. I've started these short installation instructions and will make this available to the world soon.
