Reginald Aubrey Fessenden performed the first AM radio broadcast of human voices and recorded music on Christmas Eve, 1906. In light of the technology and attitudes of his time, it was a remarkable accomplishment.
... Early that evening, wireless operators sprang to attention as they caught the call 'CQ, CQ' in the Morse code. Was it a ship in distress? They listened eagerly, and to their amazement, heard a human voice coming from their instruments - someone speaking! Then a woman's voice rose in song. It was uncanny! Many of them called to officers to come and listen; soon the wireless rooms were crowded. Next someone was heard reading a poem. Then there was a violin solo; then a man made a speech, and they could catch most of the words. Finally, everyone who had heard the program was asked to write R.A. Fessenden at Brant Rock Massachusetts - and many of the operators did. This is an excerpt. Read the full story at the Pavek Museum website. |
